Gerald was born on May 16th, 1909 in Turton.1  Gerald's father was Frederick (Fred) Ashmore and his mother was Sarah Holland.  His paternal grandparents were James Ashmore and Betsy Barrow; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Holland and Mary Ellen Brownlow. He had two brothers and a sister, named Ronald, Frank and Lily.  He was the oldest of the four children.
