Jan was born on April 29th, 1856.  Jan's father was Hendrik Jacobus Martens and his mother was Elizabeth Maria Roos.  His paternal grandparents are Jacobus Martens and Maria Magdalena Joubert. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Jacobus , Hendrik, Susannah, Elizabeth, Maria and Wilhelmina.  He is the youngest of the seven children.
