Gertrude was born in 1904. Gertrude's father was Elijha Petty Dye and her mother was Hattie Wolcott MsKusick. Her paternal grandparents were Henry Ellis Dye and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Taylor Johnson. She had six brothers and two sisters, named Arthur, Harold, John, Charles, Robert, Dale, Mabel and Georgia. She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
