Tennys' father was Jeremiah (Jerry) Robinson and her mother was Sophronie Fleury. She had a brother and six sisters, named Jerry, Pamelia, Phoebe, Lena, Delphi, Margaret and Carrie.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
