Melchior was born on March 10th, 1624 in Heusden Zolder.¹   His godmother was Margaretha Jans.  Melchior's father was Bartolomeus Gaethofs and his mother was Catharina Hemelers.  His paternal grandparents were Bartholomeus Gaethofs and Maria Beelen. He had four sisters named Maria, Catherina, Anna and Maria.  He was the second youngest of the five children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Bartholomeus and Maria.
