Josephus was born on August 10th, 1857 in Paal.1   Josephus' father was Karel (Carolus Charles) Gaethofs and his mother was Ludovica (Louisa) Van der Heijden.  His paternal grandparents were Josephus Gaethofs and Maria Christina Van Eerdewegh; his maternal grandparents were Sebastiaan  Vanderheyden and Marie Elisabeth Meyen. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named Petrus Henricus, Pieter Jan, Rosalia Seraphina, Maria Philomena, Regina, Maria Catharina Mathilda, nn, nn and Maria Clara.  He was the oldest of the ten children. He had five half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Augustinus, Henri, Ludovicus Jospehus Petrus, Carolus, Eugeen, Maria Antonia, Maria Coleta, Bernardina and Rosalia Maria.  He died at the age of 58 on December 22nd, 1915 in Utrecht.2
