Cornelius' father was Jan Franciscus Gaethofs and his mother was Catherine Elisa Vanderheyden. His paternal grandparents were Jean (Joannis) Gaethofs and Susanna Schraijen; his maternal grandparents were Jan Vanderheyden and Maria Catharina Ceelen. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Henricus, Ludovicus, Remigius, Henricus Franciscus, SN, Maria Susanna and Catherine Elisabeth. He was the second youngest of the eight children.
