Casimir was born on March 20th, 1840 in Paal.¹ Casimir's father was Josephus Gaethofs and his mother was Maria Christina Van Eerdewegh. His paternal grandparents were Petrus Franciscus Gaethofs and Catharina Elizabeth Theunis; his maternal grandparents were Jan Vaneerdeweg and Catharina Vrancken. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Carolus Charles, Pieter Hendrik , Maria Clara, Rosalia, Atalia and Maria Theresia. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
