Hendrick was born on April 10th, 1860 in Lommel.1   Hendrick's father was Henricus (Hendrik) Cox and his mother was Franciska Gaethofs.  His paternal grandfather is NN and his paternal grandmother was Clara Cox; his maternal grandparents were Gaspard Gaethofs and Antonia (Antonetta) Schillebeeks. He had four brothers and a sister, named Lodewijk, Peter-Jan, Josephus, Joannes Martinus and Maria Philomena Norbertina.  He was the third oldest of the six children.

They had six sons and a daughter, named Jan Joseph, Petrus Joannes Henricus, Ludovicus, Joannes Henricus, Ludovicus Alphonsus, Josephus Franciscus and Maria Virginia.
