Pieter Frans was born on December 12th, 1834 in Paal. Pieter Frans' father was Gerardus Claes and his mother was Anne Marie Gaethofs. His paternal grandparents were Joannes Baptista Claes and Anna Maria Daems; his maternal grandparents were Joannes (Joannes) Gaethofs and Catherina Vandebos (Vandenbosch). He had a brother and a sister, named Victor and Maria Blondina. He was the second oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother named Joseph.-
