Joannes Mathias was born on July 5th, 1817 in Zutendaal. Joannes Mathias' father was Matthijs Nijs and his mother was Anna Maria Bobbaers. His maternal grandparents were Hubertus Bobbaers and Catharina Paulissen. He had three brothers and a sister, named Mathieu, Hubertus, Lambert and <Unknown>.
