Thomas was born in 1840 in Kirkcudbrightshire.  Thomas' father was John Dixon Wilson and his mother was Jane Grey.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Wilson and Lucia Lindsey; his maternal grandparents were William Grey and Mary Tait. He had four sisters named Lucy, Mary, Jane and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
