Doreen was born in 1917 and her baptism took place on October 31st, 1917 in Roggiett, Monmouthshire. Doreen's father was Ernest Gittus and her mother was Ethel Mary Jarrett.  Her paternal grandparents were Oliver Gittus and Elizabeth; her maternal grandparents were William Thomas Jarrett and Francis Elizabeth Waters. She had two sisters named Muriel and Nora.  She was the youngest of the three children.  She died at the age of 88 in 2005.
