Talmage was born in 1894.  Talmage's father was William Campbell Purvis and his mother was Susan Bicknell.  His paternal grandparents were H. James Purvis and Nancy Elizabeth Azbill; his maternal grandparents were Sylvester W. Bicknell and Nancy Rose Bicknell.  He was the third of eight children.  He had three brothers and four sisters, named Sylvestor, Everett, Elmer, Norma, Nancy, Naomi and Malissa.
