Bessy was born in 1902.  Bessy's father was John Sherman Bicknell and her mother was Lucy Azbill.  Her paternal grandparents were Sylvester W. Bicknell and Nancy Rose Bicknell; her maternal grandparents were Linsfield Asbell and Ona Frances Gentry.  She was the third of eight children.  She had five brothers and two sisters, named Virgil, Nelson, James Earl, Kenneth Elby, John Alson, Bertha Frances and Nancy Elizabeth.  She died at the age of 2 in 1904.
