Jans was born in 1869.  Jans' father was Harmannus Panjer and his mother was Annechien Pathuis. He had three brothers and a sister, named Geert, Geert, Berend and Alberdina.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 61 in 1930.
