Karel was born on September 12th, 1837 in Steenderen. Karel's father was Gerrit Jan Engbers and his mother was Jantjen Berendina Zemmelink.  His paternal grandparents were Jan Arend Engbers and Catharina (Catrina) Garritz Wijers; his maternal grandparents were Garrit Zemmelink and Garritjen Jolink. He had a brother and two sisters, named Arent, Catharina and Berendina.  He was the oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 4 on March 5th, 1842 in Steenderen (Bronckhorst).1
