Henri was born on October 9th, 1874 in Ressen.1  Henri's father was Wilhelmus Hendricus van Kempen and his mother was Geertruida Hendrina Jacobs.  His paternal grandparents were Johannes van Kempen and Amalia Wilhelmina Evers. He had two brothers and a sister, named Johannes Wilhelmus, Jacobus Johannes and Petronella Johanna.  He was the second youngest of the four children. He had five half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Wilhelmus Johannes, Christiaan Johannes, Gerarda Geertruida, Antonius Albertus, Theodorus Johannes, Amelia Geertruida, Geertruida Amalia, Jacoba Hendrika, Hendrika Amelia and Wilhelmina Aleida.
