Garrit Jan was born on December 25th, 1801 in Zelhem.1  Garrit Jan's father was Harmen Wesselink and his mother was Meintjen /Mientjen (Mientjen) Bruggink (Meulenkamp).  His paternal grandparents were Willem Wisselink (op Hols) and Meintjen Wassink; his maternal grandparents were Berend Bruggink (alias Molenkamp / Meulenkamp) and Stiene (Christina) (Stijntje) Molenkamp. He had four brothers and a sister, named Marten, Berend, Gerrit, Derk Jan and Stijntjen / Christina.  He was the second youngest of the six children. He had a half-brother named Harmen.  He died at the age of 43 on May 8th, 1845 in Veeninkbrink, Netherlands.2
