Jan was born on January 19th, 1830.  Jan's father was Derk Versteege and his mother was Geesken Tjooikink.  His paternal grandparents were Garrit Versteege and Henders Beunk. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Jan, Gerardus, Gerritjen, Teintjen and Hendrika.  He was the youngest of the six children.
