Gerritjen was born in 1809.  Gerritjen's father was Derk Versteege and her mother was Geesken Tjooikink.  Her paternal grandparents were Garrit Versteege and Henders Beunk. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Jan, Gerardus, Jan, Teintjen and Hendrika.  She was the oldest of the six children.
