Garritjen was born on June 27th, 1776 in Zelhem, Netherlands and her baptism took place there on June 30th, 1776.  Garritjen's father was Teunis Schreur (Schreurs) and her mother was Wilmina / Willemina Bulsink (Bulink).  Her paternal grandfather was Harmen Schreurs; her maternal grandparents were Jan Bulsink and Dersken Wolsink. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Gerrit, Derk Willem, Hendrika and Janna.  She was the third oldest of the five children.
