Derk Willem was born in 1783 in Zelhem, Netherlands.  Derk Willem's father was Teunis Schreur (Schreurs) and his mother was Wilmina / Willemina Bulsink (Bulink).  His paternal grandfather was Harmen Schreurs; his maternal grandparents were Jan Bulsink and Dersken Wolsink. He had a brother and three sisters, named Gerrit, Hendrika, Janna and Garritjen.  He was the youngest of the five children.
