Gart Jan was born on September 4th, 1907 in Bekveld.1  Gart Jan's father was Arend Mulderij and his mother was Catharina Boesveld.  His paternal grandparents were Berend Mulderij and Hendrika Lankwerden; his maternal grandparents were Gart Jan Boesveld and Berendina Engbers. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Berend, Arend, Derk Jan, Hendrika, Berendina, Catharina and Arendina.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
