Arend was born on July 22nd, 1914 in Bekveld.1  Arend's father was Arend Mulderij and his mother was Catharina Boesveld.  His paternal grandparents were Berend Mulderij and Hendrika Lankwerden; his maternal grandparents were Gart Jan Boesveld and Berendina Engbers. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Gart Jan, Berend, Derk Jan, Hendrika, Berendina, Catharina and Arendina.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.
