Garrit Jan was born on October 15th, 1718 in Silvolde.1  Garrit Jan's father was Harmen Brussen (Brus) and his mother was Hendersken Biermans.  His paternal grandparents were Jan Brussen and Mechteld Brunsincks; his maternal grandparents were Berent Bierman and Vrouw / Moeder. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Berent, Hermanus, Mechelt and Johanna.  He was the oldest of the five children.
