Jan was born on February 15th, 1818 in Heidenhoek.1  Jan's father was Harmen Boesveld and his mother was Berendiena Winkelhorst.  His paternal grandparents were Lammert Boesveld and Janna Janssen; his maternal grandparents were Dirk Winkelhorst and Wilmijna Kerkamp. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Jan Willem, Lammert, Aalbert, Hendrik, Aalbert, Dersken, Willemina and Johanna.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.
