Jan was born about 1801 in Oosterleek.¹

Jan's father was Dirk Kool and his mother was Jantje Jacobs de Boer. His paternal grandparents were Jan Kool and Jantje Wijbrands; his maternal grandparents were Jacob de Boer and Immetje Klaas. He had a brother and a sister, named Klaas and Impje. He was the oldest of the three children. He died on January 2nd, 1859 in Wijdenes.¹
