Jan was born in 1784 in Beemster.  Jan's father was Claas / Klaas Groot (de) and his mother was Aafje Visser. He had a brother and a sister, named Pieter de Groot and Trijntje.  He was the second oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 69 on October 17th, 1853 in Wijdewormer.
