Dirk was born in 1773 in Wognum.  Dirk's father was Pieter Groot and his mother was Jantje Teunis Laan.  His maternal grandfather was Teunis Laan. He had two brothers and a sister, named Teunis, Pieter and Trijntje.  He was the oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 71 on September 19th, 1844 in Wognum.
