Sijmon was born in 1830.  Sijmon's father was Jan Compas and his mother was Antje Aker.  His paternal grandparents were Jan Compas / Kompas and Neeltje Adriaans Nieuweboer; his maternal grandparents were Pieter Aker and Lijsbeth Tjerks de Vries. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Jan, Pieter, Jacob, Jacob, Neeltje, Lijsbeth and Hiltje.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
