Neeltje was born in 1827.  Neeltje's father was Jan Compas and her mother was Antje Aker.  Her paternal grandparents were Jan Compas / Kompas and Neeltje Adriaans Nieuweboer; her maternal grandparents were Pieter Aker and Lijsbeth Tjerks de Vries. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Jan, Pieter, Sijmon, Jacob, Jacob, Lijsbeth and Hiltje.  She was the third oldest of the eight children.
