Jan was born in 1818.  Jan's father was Nicolaus / Nicolaas / Klaas Bruin (Bruyn) and his mother was Neeltje van Drunen.  His paternal grandparents were Pieter Claasz Bruin (Bruijn) and Niesje Jans Nieuwenhof (Nieuwehuys); his maternal grandparents were Henricus / Hendricus Roeland van Drunen and Aagje van Dijk. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Pieter, Hendrik, Aafje and Agatha.  He was the third oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 83 on April 20th, 1901 in Alkmaar.1
