Crelis was born in January 1797 in Akersloot and his baptism took place there in January 1797.  Crelis' father was Dirk Claasz Brantjes / Brandjes / Brandtjes and his mother was Antje Dirkze Wulbertze Duijn.  His paternal grandparents were Klaas Dirkze and Trijntje Krelis (Cornelisse). He had three brothers and four sisters, named Klaas, Dirk, Dirk, Maartje, Trijntje, Elisabeth and Maartje.  Crelis and Dirk were twins. He had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named Alida, Arie, Maria and Aagje.
