Jan was born on July 5th, 1767 in Alkmaar. Jan's father was Cornelis Bobeldijk and his mother was Antje Willems Luijtse.  His maternal grandfather was Willem Luijtse. He had three sisters named Neeltje, Lijsbeth and Lijsbeth.  He was the youngest of the four children.
