Andries was born in 1763 in Drakenstein, South Africa.  Andries' father was Hendrik Anthonie van Vollenhoven and his mother was Martha Susanna du Toit. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Cornelis Adolph, Ernst Johannes, Helmoet Hardwieg, Hendrick Bernadus, Lucas Christiaan, Andries Jacobus, Alida Maria, Hermina Susanna, Martha Catharina and Jacoba Claudina.  He was the second oldest of the eleven children.
