Alida Maria was born in 1764 in Drakenstein, South Africa.  Alida Maria's father was Hendrik Anthonie van Vollenhoven and her mother was Martha Susanna du Toit. She had seven brothers and three sisters, named Cornelis Adolph, Andries, Ernst Johannes, Helmoet Hardwieg, Hendrick Bernadus, Lucas Christiaan, Andries Jacobus, Hermina Susanna, Martha Catharina and Jacoba Claudina.  She was the third oldest of the eleven children.
