Robert was born on August 1st, 1746 in Carnock, Fife, , Scotland.  Robert's father was William May and his mother was Jean Wylie.  His paternal grandfather was David May and his paternal grandmother is Anna Chapman; his maternal grandfather is James Weily Skinner. He had three brothers named John, Kenneth and William.  He was the oldest of the four children.
