John was born on January 28th, 1749 in Dunfermline, Fife, , Scotland.  John's father was William May and his mother was Jean Wylie.  His paternal grandfather was David May and his paternal grandmother is Anna Chapman; his maternal grandfather is James Weily Skinner. He had three brothers named Robert, Kenneth and William.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 21 in 1770 in Virginia, United States.
