Arthur was born on November 18th, 1861 in Wheatfields, Graaff-Reinet.  Arthur's father was John Marsh and his mother was Elizabeth Gobey. He had four brothers and five sisters, named James, Samuel, John, William Stephen, Elizabeth Sarah, Lydia Hannah, Emma Jessie, Mary Eleanor and Francis Naomi.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 84 on March 12th, 1946 in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
