Marcus Marthinus was born in 1808 in Swellendam, South Africa.  Marcus Marthinus' father was Johannes Stephanus Fourie and his mother was Cornelia Margaretha Oosthuizen. He had seven brothers and six sisters, named Stephanus Johannes Petrus Jacobus, Johannes Marcus, Johannes Stephanus, Louis Petrus, Andries Jonathan, David Hermanus Hendrik, Carel Hendrik, Maria Cornelia Margaretha, Helena Geertruy, Anna Jacoba, Johanna Jacoba Petronella, Hendrika Margaretha Aletta and Hester Dorothea.  He was the fifth youngest of the fourteen children.
