David Hermanus Hendrik was born in 1810 in Swellendam, South Africa.  David Hermanus Hendrik's father was Johannes Stephanus Fourie and his mother was Cornelia Margaretha Oosthuizen. He had seven brothers and six sisters, named Stephanus Johannes Petrus Jacobus, Johannes Marcus, Johannes Stephanus, Louis Petrus, Andries Jonathan, Marcus Marthinus, Carel Hendrik, Maria Cornelia Margaretha, Helena Geertruy, Anna Jacoba, Johanna Jacoba Petronella, Hendrika Margaretha Aletta and Hester Dorothea.  He was the fourth youngest of the fourteen children.
