Elizabeth was born about 1848 in Lewes, Sussex, England.  Elizabeth's father was John Green Brooks and her mother was Caroline Fleet.  Her paternal grandfather is John Brooks; her maternal grandfather is Robert Fleet. She had two brothers and three sisters, named John Green, James, Mary Jane, Elizabeth and Elizabeth.  She was the third youngest of the six children.
