Richard was born in 1850 in Bethnal Green, London, England and his baptism took place there on June 16th, 1850.^1 2

Richard's father was William SWINEY and his mother was Agnes Mary COLEMAN.  His paternal grandparents were Valentine SWINEY and <Unknown>. He had two brothers and three sisters, named John, Henry, Emma, Mary Ann and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the six known children. He had four half-brothers and a half-sister, named William, Thomas, Samuel, George and Anne.
