Robert was born in 1803.  Robert's father was Robert Carman and his mother was Elizabeth Collingwood/Carman.  His paternal grandparents were John Carman and Mary Crowfoot/Carman.  He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, William, James, Christopher, Ruth, Elizabeth, Rebecca and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.  He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Patrick and Mary Ann.
