Robert was born on January 1st, 1846 in Canada.  Robert's father was John Carman and his mother was Mary Jane Townsend/Carman.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Carman and Elizabeth Collingwood/Carman.  He had four brothers and four sisters, named Collingwood, Charles, William, John Henry, Anne, Emmiline, Mary Jane and Libby.  He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Archibald, Patrick and Rachael E..  He died at the age of 60 on June 30th, 1906 in Mt. Pleasant, MI.  His burial was in River Lawn (Delwin Cemetary), Isabella Co, Mt. Pleasant, MI.1
