John was born in 1798 in Norfolk, England.  John's father was John Carman and his mother was Lydia Tye/Carman.  His paternal grandparents were John Carman and Mary Crowfoot/Carman.  He had a brother and a sister, named John and Ruth.  He was the oldest of the three children.  He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Simon, Elizabeth, Barbara Ann and Mary.
