JOHN M. HOURIGAN, M.D.

Dr. John M. Hourigan, who enjoys an excellent practice in Moose
Jaw as a physician and surgeon, was born in Smith's Falls, Lanark
county, Ontario, on the 25th of January, 1882.  His father, Patrick
Hourigan, who has passed away, was engaged in agricultural pursuits
during most of his life.  He was a native of Ontario and the son of
Michael Hourigan, one of the early Irish immigrants to that province.
Michael settled on a farm of uncultivated land, which he himself cleared
and turned under the plow. Patrick Hourigan was married to Elizabeth
Kelly, who survives him, as do four of their six children.  He was a
Liberal in his political views and a Roman Catholic in his religion, in
which faith the family was reared. Mrs. Hourigan continues to reside
in her native province, Ontario, which bas been her lifelong home.
John M. Hourigan, the fourth child born into the Hourigan family,
was sent to the Smith's Falls schools as a boy and after having graduated
from the high school entered Queen's University at Kingston, from which
he received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1905. The young physician
began his practice in Ontario, but five years later, in 1910, came out to
Moose Jaw, which has since been his home. In the fourteen years he
has been engaged in the practice of medicine in this city he has built up
a gratifyingly large practice and numbers many of the influential fam-
ilies of Moose Jaw among his patients. He has always made a sincere
effort to keep thoroughly up-to-date in his profession and to do so goes
away from time to time to attend clinics in the leading medical centres
of the United States and Canada. He is also a member of the staff of
the hospital of Moose Jaw, in which connection he has been a strong
factor in establishing and maintaining the highest standards of medical
and surgical practice.
In 1908 Dr. Hourigan was married to Miss Maude McKenna, a native
daughter of Ontario. Mrs. Hourigan passed away in 1915, leaving two
sons: Martin, a student in Campion College of Regina; and Jack, who
is attending the Separate School in Moose Jaw. Dr. Hourigan and his
family belong to St. Joseph's Roman Catholic parish of Moose Jaw and
the Doctor is a member of the Knights of Columbus, in which he has been
active, at one time serving as grand knight. His social and recreational
interests are indicated by his membership in the Prairie Club and Moose
Jaw Golf Club. He has been coroner of Saskatchewan since 1914. For
the past eleven years he has been chairman of the school board for St.
Agnes school, but aside from these activities devotes his attention to his
practice. He has a high conception of the duties and responsibilities of
a member of the medical profession and it is due to his consistent effort
to live up to his lofty ideals, as much as to his native ability, that he owes
his success in his chosen field of labor.
