Lived in Kitley Ontario on the 1848 census, with aleadged brothers, Thomas and Nicholas
Betty Hickey was his godmother. Hickeys are tied to the Kenny's back in Ireland.
From Anne Burgess:
Yesterday I asked Dave Allatt if he knew what lot John Balfe, and then his son Thomas balfe had in Oro. Here's his answer:
The book Kith 'N Kin, page 14, (Oro Twp., Simcoe Cty. History) says, "Mr and Mrs John Balfe from Southern Ireland migrated to Canada c. 1855 and landed reported, in Montreal. Not much is know of this family but in 1858 John Balfe was assessed for 100 acres of E 1/2 12-3 Oro." ( East half of Lot 12 Concession 3)."
Thomas had the same lot later.
I think somewhere I read that Barth Kenny was on Conc. 4 in Oro (behind John/Thomas Balfe?). Maybe someone will answer your post with this info.
In Kitley (outside S. Falls) in 1851 John Balfe lived at Conc. 2, lot 10, land owned by Michael Shanks and his wife, Mary Balfe. She was one of those Balfes who came to the area pre-Famine and evictions.

Notes for John Balfe:
John Hayes has a John Balfe baptized in Hillbrooke, Coolafancy, Catholic
Parish of Tomacork, Carnew, Co. Wicklow, Ireland.
See notes for Thomas Murphy (b. abt 1831). John Balf is listed as a sponsor at
Thomas Murphy's baptism. This could be the same John Balfe.
John Hayes examined "MS 4974, 1847, Coollattin" at the National Library in
Dublin, which is a list of those who Emigrated in 1847. John & Alice Balf were
listed on Page 45, family #142. Listed were John Balfe, Hillbrooke, Alice, his
wife, Thomas 15, Mary 11, Nicholas 4, and Pat 6 mths. Beside the list was a
note, "Holding 6 Acres (of land) from Thomas Dobbs, undertenant of Mrs.
Symes." The information on the Fitzwilliam Estates CD confirms this. Also
indicates that they were living in Carnew Parish. Nicholas Balf, Edward Balf,
and Thomas Balf and their families all we evicted in 1847 from the Fitzwilliam

Estates.
1851 census (Film C-11733, Part 1, page 9, line 3) lists him as John Balf, a
labourer, born in Ireland, R Catholic, married, age 45, living with his wife Alley
and their family in Kitley Twp, Leeds Cty. Ontario. There is also a Thomas Balf,
a weaver, born in Ireland a K. Presbyterian, married age 24 living with them.
Also see notes on Nicholas Balf (b Abt 1795). They are both listed on the same
census page and may be related. John Balfe is living in a shanty - one family.
Film C-11733, Page 5, Part 1, Line 3, John Balfe is on Lot 10 Concession 2 with
12 Acres - all under cultivation.
The book Kith 'N Kin, page 14, (Oro Twp., Simcoe Cty. History) says, "Mr and
Mrs John Balfe from Southern Ireland migrated to Canada c. 1855 and landed
reported, in Montreal. Not much is know of this family but in 1858 John Balfe
was assessed for 100 acres of E 1/2 12-3 Oro." ( East half of Lot 12 Concession
3)."
They must have moved from Kitley to Oro between 1851 and 1858.
1861 census lists him as a Farmer, born in Ireland, married in 1832, an RC, age
59, living in a log house with his wife Alice and their family in Oro Twp.
In the Index to Probate Court Records Simcoe Cty., it lists a John Balfe of Oro,
a farmer, death March 5, 1868. This could be the same person.
