Maria José's father is Comendador Eduardo Gama de Castro Lacerda and her mother is Aurélia de Barros Lacerda. Her maternal grandparents were Aurélio de Souza Monteiro de Barros and Francisca (Chiquinha) Domingues Monteiro de Barros. She has two brothers and six sisters, named Eduardo, Geso Moacir, Edmea, Nely, Emiliana, Marialva, Leda and Eny.
